IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF SCHOOL LIBRARIANS THROUGH MENTORING: THE YOUNG READERS SOCIETY, BAUCHI PERSPECTIVE

Yahaya Muhammad Sulaiman

Abstract

This paper highlights the state of primary school libraries in Bauchi metropolis, the limitations of the school teacher librarians who are charged with the responsibility of managing the school libraries.  Findings revealed that the school librarians did receive adequate formal training, hence they lacked required skills and the proficiency needed to manage their school libraries effectively.  The Young Readers Society (YRS), Bauchi came to the rescue by embarking on a mentoring programme. The mission indeed yielded positive outcome over the performance and functions of the teacher librarians across the schools involved. It was evident that the mentors, the mentoees and Young Reader Society as an association benefited from the mentoring programme.
