Abstract

New trends in the choice of Choice of vocabulary create extra active and independent language learners. Employing suitable contextual clues methods is fundamental in enhancing and providing language learners with the required skills to assume and work out word meaning precisely and reduction from over dependence on the dictionary. The aim of this study is to find out types of contextual clues chosen and the utilization of contextual clues in strategizing choice of vocabularies among students in Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri. The respondents were learners from various programmes who were taught contextual clues methods and tested using class work sheets to analyse and interpret their utilization of choice of Choice of vocabulary  for the methods. Results of findings showed that most respondents relied on special contextual clues methods, especially cognitive methods. The respondents were further observed to be independent in choice of words through creation of conscious decisions. The results showed unsuccessful and fruitless correct assumptions through some respondents regardless of comparable strategic choice. In conclusion, the level of benefits language learners get is informed by individually directed strategic choice. It is therefore recommended that more emphasis on the utilization of contextual clues in strategizing choice of vocabularies should be directed in the enhancement and perfection of the skill.
