Abstract

This research delves into the impact of environmental control on manuscripts within the National Museum in Kaduna, Nigeria. The primary objective is to ascertain the level of environmental control practiced within the institution. A survey research design was employed, engaging all 10 administrative and technical staff members through total enumeration to ensure comprehensive coverage. Data collection utilized a structured questionnaire, facilitating consistency and ease of analysis. Subsequent data processing and analysis involved systematic coding and utilization of Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) software for rigorous examination, including techniques such as frequency distribution, mean, and standard deviation. The methodology ensures reliability and validity of findings. Findings from the study reveal a high level of environmental control practiced within libraries, archives, and cultural heritage bureaus in North-West Nigeria, with an overall mean score of 3.08. Notably, layout and location exhibited very high mean scores, indicating excellent practices in these areas. Additionally, cleanliness, temperature, light, air quality, and relative humidity demonstrated high mean scores, suggesting good practices in their respective domains. However, further analysis indicates areas for improvement, particularly in controlling relative humidity, maintenance, and enhancing air quality monitoring systems. Overall, the study provides insights into the current state of environmental control of manuscripts within the National Museum, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of preservation practices in cultural heritage institutions.
