A SEMANTIC MAPPING APPROACH TO POETIC TEXTS
Abstract
Semantic mapping has been recorded to be an effective strategy for text analysis, reading and vocabulary development. Its eclectic nature has resulted in its use in virtually every domain of human endeavour including data management and organisation. However, it is surprising that semantic mapping has not been given its rightful position in the analysis of poetic texst. The present study is, therefore, a modest attempt to apply semantic mapping strategy in the analysis of poetic discourse. Accordingly, two poems were used for this purpose and it was found that semantic mapping can help the text analyst to see how words and issues discussed in a poetic text are connected.
