INFLUENCE OF READING HABITS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF BUSINESS STUDIES STUDENTS IN UPPER BASIC EDUCATION LEVEL IN ENUGU EASTLOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ENUGU STATE

Abstract


The study sought to assess the influence of reading habits on academic performance of Business Studies students in upper basic education level in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. It adopts the descriptive survey design. Three research questions and three hypotheses tested at .05 level of significance were used. Population consisted of 2490 business studies students drawn from all the public secondary schools in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. The sample for the study comprised of 249 Business Studies students using simple random sampling procedure. The instrument was validated by experts in business education and measurement and evaluation from Enugu State University of technology, Enugu. Test-re-test method was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument with coefficients of 0.82. A four-point response type of Very high Extent, High Extent, Low extent and Very Low Extent with 20 items were used. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze research questions while t-test was used to test the hypotheses. Based on the data analysis, it was found out that note taking, environment, and class attendance have influence on the academic performance of Business Studies Students and also there was no significant difference in the mean ratings of male and female Business Studies  Students in Upper Basic Education level in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. The researcher finally recommended that the learning environment should be made conducive with all the necessary facilities which will make class attendance attractive and enable the students to readily take note in the class.
