THE SCHOLASTICS PHILOSOPHY OF JUSTICE AND THE POST- UNIFIED TERTIARY MATRICULATION EXAMINATION (POST-UTME)

Sylvester Enomah (PhD)

Abstract

Candidates must pass the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME), administered by individual institutions, after taking the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)-organized Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This requirement exists to ensure admission to any post-secondary institution in Nigeria. In 2008, JAMB decried Post-UTME as one of the most daunting and challenging problems currently threatening the existence of the Board and admission procedures as presently administered by the institutions. Post-UTME is not only a problem for JAMB but also a problem for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions in Nigeria. This paper examines the problem of the Post-UTME against the background of the Scholastics concept of Justice. The findings show that the existence of JAMB's UTME does not need the existence of Post-UTME. Secondly, the co-existence of JAMB's UTME and Post-UTME has led to wastage of resources, entrenchment of injustices, stress, risk of motor accidents and death. Rationalization, conjecture, presentation, phenomenology, ideas, evaluation, application, comparative analysis, prescription, and assessment are some of the techniques used in this article. The report suggests that Post-UTME be discontinued or reorganized for candidates who do not pass JAMB's UTME, and that JAMB's problems be investigated and resolved for improved performance.
