SOCIAL SKILLS AND DRUG ABUSE AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OGUN EAST SENATORIAL DISTRICT, OGUN STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Drug abuse has been commonly described as the arbitrary use of drugs for non-medical reasons. Deaths arising from illicit drugs usage continue to rise and adolescents are the most vulnerable risk group for substance abuse. Substance abuse affects future life, brain development, and socialisation processes of the adolescent in a negative way. The study investigated information use, social skills and drug abuse among Senior Secondary School Students in Ogun East Senatorial District, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted survey design. The population was 49,823 students comprising of 13 senior secondary school students in Ogun East Senatorial District. Multi-stage sampling technique was used. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Finding reveals that use of information was ‘rarely’(M= 2.45).Social skills possessed were also below average (M=2.40). The study concluded that both information use and possession of social skills were low. The study therefore recommended that secondary school students should be encouraged to use related information from different sources.Ogun State Ministry of Education should incorporate social skills into secondary school curriculum.
