ECONOMICS OF WATER GOVERNANCE - RURAL HEALTH SURVIVAL LINKAGES IN LAGOS: EVIDENCE FROM BADAGRY LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Abstract


The environmental significance of water as an economic good and important natural resource endowment can no longer be overemphasized. Water is highly strategic to all economic sectors and across a range of spatial scales from local to global. However, weak water governance by relevant actors at the state or local levels result into frequent hazard; flooding, droughts, and contaminated water which threatens human health survival. Following from the above, the paper adopted a mixed methodological approach and within this research orientation, a triangulated method of data collection (interview, direct observation and questionnaire) was adopted in order to find answer to the objective of the study. The questionnaire administered was analyzed using logistic regression technique. This technique predicted the dependent variable (health conditions) from the independent variables (access to water, safety of water; water related diseases and infrastructure water supply.   The paper discovered that access to water, decreases the likelihood of being sick, while other variables were held constant. Also, one percent increase in water safety decreases the health conditions of the people by 24%, ceterisparibus. In addition, an increase in water related diseases and cost of water increases poor health. It was also discovered that for every unit increase in water and sanitation infrastructures, decreases poor health decreases by 1%. In conclusion, the paper advocates for institutions involved in water governance at the local level to improve on their accountability, transparency and provide rural infrastructures like, covered well, health care centers, electricity, good roads, primary health care centers and good transportation systems in order to improve the synergy between water governance and health conditions.
