NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT OF MORINGA OLEIFERA LAM. EDIBLE SEEDS AND SEEDLESS PODS
Abstract
Moringa oleifera Lam. is popularly called the "miracle tree" due to its various uses, and this is because it has an impressive range of nutritional and medicinal values. This study aimed to analyze the proximate composition of both the edible seeds and non-edible seedless pods using standard methods. The proximate analysis of the edible seeds revealed crude protein (44.11±0.05%), crude fat (34.60±0.03%), moisture content (5.53±0.04%), crude fibre (5.47±0.03%), ash content (4.75±0.03%) and energy (4639.55± 16.93kcal/kg). Proximate analysis of the seedless pod sample revealed the presence of carbohydrates (47.6±1.24%), proteins (8.09±0.01%), fats (0.86±0.07%), fibre (13.8±0.07%), moisture (6.04±0.04%) and ash (8.78±0.24%). The high energy content of the edible seeds suggests they can provide a good source of calories, which can be beneficial for individuals with increased energy needs. The edible seeds also suggest that the seeds can serve as natural sources of essential minerals, potentially reducing the need for mineral supplements. Overall, both the edible seeds and seedless pods offer valuable nutritional components that can have clinical implications for improving dietary quality and addressing specific health concerns.
